Buying a YouTube channel the right way comes down to 5 simple steps:

  1. Set your budget.
  2. Pick a niche.
  3. Find a seller.
  4. Verify the real income of the channel.
  5. Buy the channel and become its owner.

Below I go through each step. I have been through every one of them in practice, and more than once.

How I started

When I first thought about buying a YouTube channel, I had no idea where to start. I had no ready-made guide, and the internet had too much information, all of it scattered. I put the steps together bit by bit, went through every stage myself, and learned from my own mistakes and other people's along the way.

I never found a ready system I could just pick up and repeat. But I quickly understood that there are a huge number of hidden traps. Most of them you only discover once you are already in the deal.

A channel is an asset, like a rental house

I have a friend in America, a dentist. He puts his capital into real estate: he now owns 12 houses, each one rented out and paying him every month. Each house belongs to its own company, and one parent company owns them all. If something happens to one house, the others are not affected.

Parent company Company 1 Company 2 Company 3 HouseHouseYouTube channel
Each asset sits in its own company, and one parent company owns them all. Trouble with one asset does not touch the others. You can hold a channel the same way you hold a house.

I see YouTube the same way. A channel is digital real estate: you can build one from scratch, or you can buy a ready one that already earns from YouTube ads, sponsorships and sales of its own products. And if you already have a business, a channel is for it what a storefront on the main street of your town is.

Build from scratch or buy a ready one

When I have the budget, I choose to buy, because it saves the most valuable thing I have – time. A channel built from zero grows slowly, and nobody guarantees it will take off right away. Nobody fully knows how the YouTube algorithms really work. The same topic gets 100,000 views on one channel and a thousand on another.

The numbers back this up. According to vidIQ (February 2026), new channels that managed to reach 1,000 subscribers at all needed about 16 months on average to get there. And that is only one of several conditions for monetization. A vidIQ study of 32.9 million small channels (September 2026) showed that about 1.5% reached 1,000 subscribers within a year. Fewer than two channels out of a hundred.

If you are ready to spend a year or two on one topic and wait for results, grow a channel from scratch. If you want to save time, buy a ready one. When you buy a channel, you are buying the work of someone who has already walked this road for you.

Step 1. Set your budget

A channel is bought like a business, so the price is counted in months of income. The price of a channel is its average monthly profit multiplied by the number of months it takes to pay for itself.

In my view, a channel earning $1,000 a month should cost at least $6,000, which means paying for itself in 6 months. In practice, such channels usually cost from $10,000 to $20,000: the owner put effort into the channel and wants fair pay for it.

From the data I collected across different marketplaces and platforms (October 2026), the picture is this. An ordinary channel cheaper than $20,000 sells for about 13 of its monthly incomes. And if the channel's income is verified, buyers are ready to pay almost twice as much – about 24 monthly incomes.

Channel incomeUsual priceWith verified income
$1,000 a monthabout $13,000about $24,000

There is no generally accepted "high" or "low" price. The seller names a price, and the market either agrees or it does not.

My personal red flag is a channel that pays for itself in less than six months. If a rental house pays for itself in two months and is still for sale, something is clearly wrong with it. There can be different reasons: the person urgently needs money, is tired, or is leaving the business. Sometimes you come across good channels where the seller simply does not know their real value. I check channels with a very fast payback much more closely.

Step 2. Pick a niche and decide who will make the videos

My portfolio has several YouTube channels: some I bought as assets, some I built from scratch. I mostly buy channels on topics that interest me myself. Sometimes I take a channel on a topic that is not so close to me, but only if I understand that I can produce quality content for it. And some channels I build from scratch because I want to walk that road myself.

Look at faceless channels. Buying a channel where the main thing on screen is a living author is almost pointless. The author leaves, and what will you do with the channel? You can try handing it to a second host, but how that will work is unclear.

The main question of this step: can you make videos at the same level and in the same volume as the previous owner, or better? There are two ways:

  • Do it yourself. Be honest about your strength, if you already have experience producing quality content.
  • Hire an agency that makes videos turnkey. Best of all for a percentage of the channel's income, not a fixed fee. Then the agency is like a partner with a share in the company: bad videos cut its income too, so it wants to do better. That is how I work myself. I run my own channels and the channels of a small number of clients for a percentage of income.

Step 3. Find a seller

Channels are sold on marketplaces, account exchanges, forums, in open and closed Telegram communities, and directly by owners. My experience showed: the cheaper and simpler the platform, the more fakes and poor-quality offers there are, and those also have to be filtered out properly.

In my experience, a deal is more often spoiled not by scammers, although they turn up too. Most often a deal is spoiled by ignorance.

Channels are usually sold by people who managed to create a YouTube channel, bring it to monetization and start earning. But that does not make them entrepreneurs who know how to properly sell what they have. Both the seller and the buyer usually do not fully understand how the whole process works.

Step 4. Verify the real income

This is the first thing I do, and after it it is clear whether there is any point in continuing the conversation. A seller can say one thing, while YouTube's data shows something completely different. You are told the channel brings in $1,000 a month, and the official YouTube analytics shows $427. Sometimes the person is not lying, they just do not understand their own numbers.

That is exactly why I built QMW. The seller connects the channel through Google sign-in to the Gutenberg Factory app, which has passed Google's verification. Thanks to it I see the channel's real numbers – income, views by month and so on – straight from official YouTube Analytics, not from the seller's word.

Income and views are from YouTube Analytics for the last 3 full months. Income per 1,000 views is about $6.50. Data received on Oct 28, 2026.

Asking price$10,000pays for itself in about 24 months
Income per YouTube data$427a month, 3-month average
This is what a verified channel looks like on QMW: monthly income is taken straight from YouTube, and only an approved buyer sees the channel name. The figures are illustrative.

This data is useful not only to the buyer but to the seller too. They see their real numbers, which show what their YouTube channel is really worth.

If the channel earns not only from YouTube ads but also from sponsorships or its own products, I ask for proof of each income stream.

What else is worth checking:

  • Income and views for at least 6 months, better 12 (if they exist).
  • Where viewers come from: search and recommendations are good, bought ads and view-botting are bad.
  • No warnings or strikes for violations.
  • Rights to the music, video and images used in the videos.

Step 5. Buy the channel and become the owner

A channel is handed over through a Google brand account. The seller adds you to the channel as an owner, and only after 7 days, under Google's rules, can they make you the primary owner. The seller does not disappear from the channel afterwards: they stay as a regular owner until they remove themselves. If they have not, remove them yourself – the primary owner can remove anyone.

Access settings of a Google brand account: the seller is the primary owner, the buyer is an owner
The first 7 days after you are added: the seller is the primary owner (Primary owner), you are an owner (Owner). Then the seller transfers primary owner rights to you.

It is best to send the money through an escrow service (a guarantee service): the seller gets it only after the channel is fully yours. This protects both the seller and the buyer.

On the first day after the purchase:

  1. Make sure you are the primary owner and the seller is not among the owners or managers.
  2. Change the recovery email and phone, and turn on two-step verification. This protects against the most common scam, where the seller takes the money and then takes the channel back through account recovery.
  3. Connect your own AdSense account to the channel so the income comes to you.
  4. Open the "Monetization" section in YouTube Studio and check that there are no warnings.

If you are scared

Fear is normal, I have it too. Our brain does not like anything new. It likes things stable and clear, and it protects us from our own new ideas and actions.

I treat business as a tool for reaching goals, and money comes as a by-product when you do what the market thanks you for. If you believe that buying a few channels leads you to your goals – act.

You can do nothing and regret all your life that you never tried, or you can act step by step, enjoy the process and learn the craft in practice. You have already made the first step: you read this article.
